The ring that fell on Kenya
The account
A red-hot metal ring plunged from the sky onto a Kenyan village, and theories about spacecraft soon followed.
What investigators found
The Kenya Space Agency identified the piece as a rocket separation ring, in other words, space junk.
The story
On December 30, 2024, residents of the village of Mukuku, in Makueni County, saw a glowing object fall from the sky. On the ground, they found a metal ring about two and a half meters in diameter, with an estimated weight of half a ton. No one was hurt, but the images went around the world.
The Kenya Space Agency recovered the piece and reported that it was a separation ring, used to join rocket stages, that had survived reentry. The exact launch it came from remained under investigation. The episode reignited the debate over responsibility for space junk that falls on countries with no space program.
