Arcesio Bermúdez and the Light of Anolaima
The account
A Colombian farmer supposedly approached a glowing object with a flashlight and died a few days later.
What investigators found
The death is real and the family reported the light, but no link between the two was ever proven; the medical cause was never publicly explained.
The story
In July 1969, on a farm near Anolaima, in Cundinamarca, the family of Arcesio Bermúdez reported seeing a glowing object resting in a field near the house. According to the account, Bermúdez walked out to it with a flashlight while his relatives watched from a distance. In the following days he fell ill and, soon after, died, which earned the case a reputation as one of the most tragic in Latin American ufology.
The story was published by the Colombian press and is still retold in books and TV shows today. There is, however, no released medical record linking the illness to the alleged object. Skeptical researchers note that the narrative grew more elaborate over the years and that the cause of death may have been an ordinary illness. With respect for the family, the case remains unanswered.
