Flight 674 over Bariloche

Disputed San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina · July 31, 1995

The Polanco case, the Bariloche sightingHistory Latinoamérica

The account

A glowing object supposedly escorted a passenger jet on its approach to Bariloche while the airport lights failed.

What investigators found

There was no definitive official conclusion; skeptics point to ground lights, celestial bodies and nighttime misperception, with no proof of a craft.

The story

On the night of July 31, 1995, Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight 674 from Buenos Aires was approaching Bariloche when Captain Jorge Polanco reported a bright light that began to follow the plane. According to the accounts, another flight crew and observers on the ground also saw the phenomenon, and the runway lighting reportedly failed for a few moments.

The case became the most famous in Argentine aviation and still appears in documentaries today. Polanco stood by his account for decades. There is, however, no radar record or image proving a solid object. Skeptical investigators note that ground lights, bright planets and the disorientation typical of night landings in mountainous terrain explain many similar cases.
