The story
Since late 2025, residents of rural Barras, in northern Piauí, and of neighboring towns such as Esperantina have reported lights that suddenly appear in the sky, change altitude and seem to follow people traveling the roads. The subject made the regional press and social media, with videos shot on cell phones and accounts of fear, recalling the chupa-chupa panic in the North in the 1970s.
Ufologists from groups in Piauí went to rural settlements in the region to interview residents and try to record the lights, and released images of luminous spheres among the trees. So far, no independent technical analysis has explained the recordings. Experts point out that drones, airplanes, satellites and distant flashlights can look like strange objects in the dark, especially once fear has already spread.
