The Belgian UFO wave
The account
Giant, silent triangles with lights at their corners flew over the country for months and outran F-16 fighter jets.
What investigators found
There were thousands of reports and an investigation by the Belgian Air Force. The most famous photo of the wave was admitted to be a fake in 2011.
The story
On November 29, 1989, two police officers in the town of Eupen, Belgium, saw a triangular object with three bright lights passing slowly and silently. In the weeks that followed, thousands of people across the country reported similar sightings.
On the night of March 30 to 31, 1990, the Belgian Air Force sent F-16 fighters after radar targets that seemed to move abruptly. General Wilfried De Brouwer even held a press conference on the case. In 2011, the author of the wave's most famous photo, a triangle with lights, admitted it was a model. The other reports remain unexplained.
