The Berwyn Mountains Incident

Disputed Llandrillo, Wales · January 23, 1974

The Welsh Roswell Case ExplainedOnlooker UK

The account

A craft supposedly crashed in the Welsh mountains, and the military secretly recovered the wreckage and even bodies.

What investigators found

Records show a small earthquake and a bright meteor on the same night; the lights on the mountain are attributed to poachers.

The story

On the night of January 23, 1974, residents of the village of Llandrillo, in north Wales, heard a loud bang and felt the ground shake. Shortly afterward, a bright light was seen on the slopes of the Berwyn Mountains, and the police received several calls. Over time, stories emerged that a craft had crashed and that the military had sealed off the area to recover wreckage and bodies.

The case earned the nickname of the Welsh Roswell. Researchers who gathered the documents of the time showed that the tremor was a small earthquake recorded by seismographs and that, almost at the same moment, a bright meteor crossed the sky over the region. The lights seen on the mountain would have come from poachers using lamps. There is no proof of any military recovery operation.
