The Guardian case of Carp
The account
An anonymous informant called Guardian supposedly sent secret documents and a video proving an alien landing near Ottawa.
What investigators found
The documents were judged to be forgeries, and an investigation by ufologists concluded the whole thing was a local hoax.
The story
Between 1989 and 1991, residents of the Carp area, west of Ottawa, reported strange lights over the fields. In 1991, UFO researchers in Canada and the United States began receiving anonymous packages postmarked in Ottawa and signed by someone called Guardian. They contained photos, maps, alleged military documents and a videotape said to show a craft landing in a marsh.
The case made it to television and became one of the most controversial in the country. But the documents were full of glaring errors and a muddled story about wars and gray aliens, and they were judged to be forgeries. In 1995, the Ontario chapter of MUFON published a report classifying the whole affair as a local hoax. The author of the packages was never officially identified.
