The story
Chilca is a coastal district south of Lima, surrounded by desert. Its fame began in 1974, when the group led by Peruvian Sixto Paz Wells, who claimed to receive extraterrestrial messages, organized vigils in the area and announced sightings arranged in advance. Word spread and gave rise to a contactee movement with followers in several countries.
Since then, Chilca has drawn visitors who spend the night watching the sky, and TV shows hold vigils with cameras rolling. Peruvian researchers who have analyzed the footage typically identify airplanes, satellites, meteors or reflections. To this day there is no independently verified record supporting the announced contacts.
