The lights of Deception Island
The account
Military personnel at neighboring bases in Antarctica reportedly saw a glowing object maneuvering over the island.
What investigators found
The reports from bases of different countries are real, but there is no physical evidence; bright planets and polar atmospheric phenomena are the skeptical explanations.
The story
In the Antarctic winter of 1965, military personnel at Argentine, Chilean and British bases on Deception Island reported a glowing object that changed color and direction in the sky. The case carried weight because the reports came from garrisons of different countries and reached naval commands, and the Argentine Navy even released a statement on the matter.
Decades later, new testimony from veterans revived the subject, some of it with details that do not appear in the records of the time. Skeptics point out that in the polar winter, bright planets near the horizon, atmospheric refraction and extreme isolation can produce convincing illusions. With no analyzed photos or instrument data, the episode remains open.
