The Duhamel circles

Disputed Duhamel, Alberta, Canada · June 1967

Canada's first reported crop circles: Duhamel, Alberta, 1967Strange North

The account

Circular marks appeared on an Alberta farm and were seen as the footprints of ships that had supposedly landed there.

What investigators found

There was no official conclusion; the usual hypotheses are fungi, natural soil phenomena or human activity.

The story

In June 1967, circular marks were discovered in a field on a farm near the hamlet of Duhamel, in central Alberta. The case is remembered as the first report of mysterious crop circles in Canada and was quickly linked to flying saucers, in a year when the country also saw the Falcon Lake and Shag Harbour cases.

The circles drew the attention of the press and the curious, but no one saw any object landing at the site. With no evidence of any craft, the episode was left unresolved. Skeptics point out that rings in the soil can have natural causes, such as fungi, and that decades later many crop circles were admitted to be the work of ordinary people. To ufologists, Duhamel paved the way for other similar cases in the region.
