The Norway spiral

Confirmed Northern Norway · December 9, 2009

The spiral explainedCBS News

The account

A giant spiral of light, with a blue beam, spun in the sky over Norway and was seen as a portal, a wormhole or an alien craft.

What investigators found

Russia confirmed that a Bulava missile, launched from a submarine in the White Sea, failed and spun out of control, creating the effect.

The story

On the morning of December 9, 2009, residents of northern Norway, especially around Tromsø, saw a spiral of white light appear in the still-dark sky, opening outward in turns, with a bluish beam coming from its center. The phenomenon lasted only a few minutes and was also seen from Sweden. Photos and videos went around the world that same day, along with theories about portals and secret experiments.

The explanation came quickly: Russia's Ministry of Defense admitted that a test of the Bulava missile, fired from a submarine in the White Sea, had failed in its third stage. The missile lost control and spun, and its fuel, lit by the sun, formed the spiral. It is a solved case.
