The UFOs over the Florence Stadium
The account
Bright objects crossed the sky during a soccer game, the match stopped and white threads rained down on the stadium.
What investigators found
A common explanation is a migration of spiders, which fly attached to silk threads and can form shining clouds.
The story
On October 27, 1954, the Florence stadium was hosting a friendly between Fiorentina and Pistoiese when part of the crowd and the players looked up. Witnesses described bright, fast objects crossing the sky, and the match was halted for a few minutes. Soon afterward, a white, fibrous material fell over the city and quickly disintegrated.
This material became known as angel hair, a name used for similar cases in other countries. A sample was analyzed at the University of Florence, but the results never settled the debate. Many researchers suggest the phenomenon was a migration of young spiders, which travel through the air on silk threads and can reflect sunlight, forming shining masses in the sky.
