The meteorite on the pillow
The account
A stone fallen from the sky crashed through a house's roof and landed on the pillow, next to a woman's head.
What investigators found
Scientists confirmed the stone was a meteorite, an extremely rare event, but with no mystery at all.
The story
In the early hours of October 3, 2021, Ruth Hamilton was asleep at her home in Golden, British Columbia, when she woke to a loud bang and bits of drywall on her face. A fist-sized rock had crashed through the roof and landed on her pillow, just centimeters from her head. Frightened, she called the police, who at first suspected work being done nearby.
Witnesses had seen a fireball in the sky that night, and scientists at Western University in Ontario examined the rock and confirmed it was a meteorite. The story traveled the world as an example that such falls happen, even though they almost never hit houses. Ruth kept the rock and escaped unharmed.
