The Dome of the Rock UFO
The account
A light descended over the Dome of the Rock, hovered and then shot into the sky, filmed from several angles.
What investigators found
Analyses found signs of editing in the videos, and the case is widely considered a hoax.
The story
In late January 2011, videos posted online showed a light slowly descending over the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem in the early morning hours. The glowing point stopped above the shrine, flashed and then shot upward at tremendous speed. Other recordings soon appeared, supposedly made by different people in different places, which lent weight to the case.
The excitement did not last. Analysts, including some within the UFO community itself, noted that the videos showed signs of digital manipulation and that the angles did not match one another as they should. The most accepted conclusion is that the recordings were produced together as a hoax. Even so, the setting, a site sacred to three religions, made the episode spread widely on social media.
