The rocket that plunged into Lake Kölmjärv
The account
A rocket-shaped object fell into a lake in northern Sweden, and the Armed Forces searched the bottom without finding anything.
What investigators found
The military search found no wreckage; the most cited hypothesis is a meteor or a misinterpreted phenomenon during the 1946 wave.
The story
In the middle of the "ghost rockets" wave that alarmed Sweden in 1946, people living by Lake Kölmjärv, in the far north of the country, reported seeing a gray, elongated object with small wings come down from the sky and plunge into the water with a roar, throwing up a column of water.
Swedish military personnel were sent to the site, and divers and equipment searched the lake bottom for days. Nothing was found. At the time, the suspicion was Soviet testing of rockets captured from the Germans, but no proof of that ever emerged. Modern investigators believe meteors and misidentifications explain much of the wave, and the Kölmjärv case still has no wreckage to settle it.
