The five discs of Langenburg
The account
A farmer said he saw five metallic objects spinning over his field, leaving rings pressed into the ground.
What investigators found
The Mounties confirmed the rings but found no explanation; skeptics point to natural phenomena or a prank.
The story
At around 10:30 a.m. on September 1, 1974, farmer Edwin Fuhr was harvesting his crop near Langenburg, Saskatchewan, when he said he saw five saucer-shaped objects, metallic and spinning just above the ground. According to him, the objects rose together and vanished into the sky, leaving behind five rings of flattened vegetation.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police went to the site and documented the rings, finding no sign that people had made them. The case gained international fame, and Fuhr stood by his account all his life. There are no photos of the objects and no other direct witnesses. Skeptics note that natural phenomena and pranks can mark fields, but no definitive explanation has been accepted.
