The Disabled Missiles of Malmstrom
The account
A red light hovered over a nuclear base, and moments later missiles went offline.
What investigators found
The Air Force recorded the shutdown as an electrical fault and recognizes no link to unidentified objects.
The story
In March 1967, Minuteman nuclear missiles at a base in Montana unexpectedly went out of operation. Former launch officer Robert Salas says that on one of those nights, guards reported by phone a reddish object hovering over the entrance to the facility. Shortly afterward, according to him, the missiles under his command went into a no-go status.
Documents from the time confirm a shutdown at one of the base's units, attributed to a problem in the electrical system. There is no official record linking the episode to a UFO. Salas has repeated his testimony many times, including at events with members of Congress, and the case has become a centerpiece of the debate over UFOs and nuclear weapons.
