The Kelsey Bay photo

Disputed Kelsey Bay, British Columbia, Canada · October 8, 1981

One of Canada's strangest sightingsHISTORY

The account

A tourist photographed a mountain and, when the film was developed, found a sharp disc hanging in the sky.

What investigators found

Analysts found no signs of tampering, but no one saw the object at the time, which weakens the case.

The story

At around 11 a.m. on October 8, 1981, Hannah McRoberts was traveling with her husband and daughter along the east coast of Vancouver Island. At a stop near Kelsey Bay, she photographed a mountain. Only when the film was developed did the family notice, in one of the frames, a sharply defined disc-shaped object in the sky above the peak.

The family contacted the Vancouver planetarium, and researchers analyzed the negative without finding signs of fraud. The image went on to become one of the most cited UFO photos in the world. Its weak point is that no one saw the object live. Skeptics note that birds, insects or objects tossed into the air can appear frozen in a photo without the photographer noticing.
