The Meng Zhaoguo Encounter

Speculation Wuchang, Heilongjiang, China · June 1994

The unsettling case of Meng ZhaoguoJulian Cavalero

The account

A Chinese forestry worker said he was visited by a tall alien woman after seeing a shining object on a mountain.

What investigators found

There is no physical evidence; skeptics suggest sleep paralysis, imagination or a bid for fame.

The story

In June 1994, Meng Zhaoguo, a worker on a forestry farm near Wuchang, in northeastern China, said he saw a shining object on a nearby mountain. When he climbed up with a coworker to investigate, he said he was struck by a strange force. Over the following days, he claimed that a very tall alien woman visited him at home, and that the two had an intimate encounter.

The account drew Chinese ufologists and became one of the best known cases in the country. Meng showed a scar on his leg as proof, but nothing was independently confirmed. Skeptics note that episodes of sleep paralysis often bring visions of figures in the bedroom and a feeling of weight on the body. Without material evidence, the case remains a personal account.
