The Mexico Eclipse UFO
The account
During the total eclipse, thousands of people filmed a silver object hanging motionless in the sky.
What investigators found
Astronomers note that Venus shone brightly near the Sun during totality and accounts for much of the footage.
The story
On July 11, 1991, a total solar eclipse darkened Mexico City for several minutes. With millions of people looking up and many cameras rolling, recordings emerged of a bright, seemingly stationary point near the covered Sun. Journalist Jaime Maussan took the footage to television, and the eclipse kicked off a long wave of sightings in the country.
Astronomers point out that during that totality, the planet Venus became visible and very bright near the Sun, exactly where many videos show the object. Other recordings were attributed to balloons and reflections. Supporters of the case argue that some images show a shape and movement inconsistent with a planet.
