The Minot B-52

Disputed Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, USA · October 24, 1968

The Minot Air Force Base UFOUFO Best Case

The account

A glowing object paced a B-52 bomber and was seen by nuclear missile guards.

What investigators found

Blue Book attributed the reports to natural phenomena and to misidentified stars and planets.

The story

In the early hours of October 24, 1968, airmen doing maintenance on missile silos near Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, reported a glowing orange object over the field. At the same time, the crew of a B-52 bomber approaching the base saw something on radar pace the aircraft and later observed a glow on the ground.

The onboard radar recorded the return, and part of the screen was photographed. Project Blue Book concluded that the reports could be explained by atmospheric phenomena and stars mistaken for objects. Researchers who gathered testimony and documents decades later consider that explanation inadequate, and the case remains under discussion.
