Ratanabá, the City That Never Existed
The account
Beneath the rainforest lies the capital of a 450-million-year-old civilization, with hidden tunnels and pyramids.
What investigators found
There is no archaeological evidence at all. Four hundred and fifty million years ago there were not even vertebrates on dry land, let alone cities.
The story
In June 2022, social media posts spread the story of Ratanabá, a supposed lost city beneath the Amazon that had been the capital of the world 450 million years ago. The narrative came from Dakila Pesquisas, a group based in Mato Grosso, and spoke of giant structures, tunnels and hidden riches. Images from other places and doctored pictures circulated as if they were proof.
Archaeologists, geologists and paleontologists debunked the story. At the proposed date, life had barely left the oceans, and the Amazon as we know it did not exist. No site, artifact or published study supports the idea. What the Amazon actually holds are real traces of ancient Indigenous peoples, such as planned villages and terra preta, the dark soil they created, discovered through scientific methods and far more interesting than the legend.
