Rendlesham: the testimony of Colonel Charles Halt7 News Spotlight

The account

American servicemen found a triangular craft landed in the forest, next to a base holding nuclear weapons.

What investigators found

There is an official memo and an audio recording made by the deputy base commander. Skeptics attribute some of the lights to a nearby lighthouse and to meteors.

The story

In the early hours of December 26, 1980, American soldiers at a base in England saw strange lights in Rendlesham Forest and went out to investigate. Some said they got close to a metallic triangular object. The next day, they found marks on the ground and broken branches.

Two nights later, the deputy base commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, went to the site with other servicemen and recorded what he saw on a portable tape recorder. In January, he sent an official memo to the British Ministry of Defence. The case became known as "Britain's Roswell." Skeptics note that a lighthouse on the coast flashed in the same direction as the lights.
