Stonehenge's ancient mystery may have been solvedOlhar Digital

The account

An observatory or energy portal built with lost knowledge.

What investigators found

Aligned with the sunrise on the summer solstice. The bluestones came from Wales, 200 km away, and a 2024 study showed that the Altar Stone came from northern Scotland, more than 700 km away.

The story

On Salisbury Plain, in southern England, a circle of giant stones has stood through the centuries. Stonehenge was built in stages, between about 3000 and 2000 BC, by peoples who did not yet know writing.

The monument is aligned with the sunrise on the summer solstice and the sunset on the winter solstice. Throughout history it has been called a druid temple, an observatory, a cemetery and even a landing pad for spacecraft. In the Middle Ages, a legend said the wizard Merlin had flown the stones there through the air.

Science discovered that the truth is almost as impressive. The smaller stones, the "bluestones," came from Wales, more than 200 kilometers away. And a 2024 study showed that the Altar Stone came from northern Scotland, more than 700 kilometers away. How they were brought there is still one of the great puzzles of prehistory.
