The "UFO Port" of the Tatacoa Desert

Speculation Villavieja, Huila, Colombia · around 2008

The case of the UFO port in the Tatacoa DesertEL TIEMPO

The account

A religious group built a huge circle in the desert where craft from other worlds would land.

What investigators found

The circle exists and became a tourist attraction, but there is no proof of the sightings; the dark skies of the Tatacoa favor viewing stars and satellites.

The story

Around 2008, a religious community built a circle about 50 meters across in the middle of the Tatacoa Desert, in Huila. Its members said they had been contacted by beings from the cosmos and that this would be the landing site for their craft. The place earned the nickname "ovnipuerto", or UFO port, and locals began telling stories of rituals and lights in the sky.

The newspaper El Tiempo devoted an episode of its series on Colombia's X-Files to the case and interviewed experts, who said there was no proof of the sightings. The Tatacoa is now one of the country's top destinations for astronomy tourism precisely because its skies are dark and clear, which makes it easy to mistake satellites, meteors and planets for something extraordinary.
