The UFOs of Peña de Juaica
The account
Lights and craft supposedly appeared often over Peña de Juaica, near Bogotá, and there were even abduction claims.
What investigators found
There were many reports, but no sighting was ever proven; the site's fame grew with television and now drives local tourism.
The story
In the 1990s, Tenjo, a town on the Bogotá savanna, became known for reports of flying objects over Peña de Juaica, a rocky hill in the area. Locals and visitors described lights appearing at night, and a few alleged abduction cases drew attention among Colombian ufologists. In 1998, the public television documentary series Ladrones de Historias devoted an episode to the phenomenon.
Since then, Peña de Juaica has drawn curious visitors who climb the hill to watch the sky, and ufology has become part of the town's tourism. Shows such as Caracol's Los Informantes have returned to the subject with new testimony. No report, however, has produced physical proof, and investigators point to the power of suggestion in places that already have a reputation for mystery.
