The Trancas case

Disputed Trancas, Tucumán, Argentina · October 1963

The Trancas caseEstranhos Entre Nós

The account

A family in rural Tucumán supposedly saw glowing objects landed beside the railroad, firing beams of light at the house.

What investigators found

Police and the press interviewed the witnesses, but nothing was proven; skeptics suggest lights from vehicles or railway work seen in the darkness.

The story

In October 1963, the Moreno family, who lived on a farm near Trancas in northern Argentina, said they saw several glowing objects at night hovering over the railroad tracks near their house. According to their account, beams of light and a sensation of heat struck the property, and the witnesses were badly frightened.

The case was reported nationwide, police interviewed the residents, and ufologists consider it one of the strongest encounters in South America because of the number of witnesses. Even so, no conclusive physical evidence was ever presented. Skeptics raise the possibility of lights from vehicles or railway equipment, seen in the dark countryside and magnified by fear.
