The Trindade Island photos
The account
A Saturn-shaped object passed over the island and was photographed in front of the crew of a Navy ship.
What investigators found
The photos were released by the Brazilian government itself. Skeptics raise the possibility of a hoax. The case has never been resolved.
The story
On January 16, 1958, the training ship Almirante Saldanha, of the Brazilian Navy, was anchored near Trindade Island, in the middle of the Atlantic, on a scientific mission. Photographer Almiro Baraúna, who was on board, took four pictures of a flattened object, resembling the planet Saturn, passing over the island.
Several people on deck said they saw the object. The photos were developed on board and, weeks later, released with the approval of President Juscelino Kubitschek, going around the world. Critics note that Baraúna had made trick photos before and doubt their authenticity. The case remains the most famous photographic record in Brazilian ufology.
