The story
On the afternoon of January 20, 1996, in Varginha, in southern Minas Gerais, the sisters Liliane and Valquíria and their friend Kátia were crossing a vacant lot in the Jardim Andere neighborhood when they saw a creature crouching against a wall: brown, oily skin, a head with three ridges and enormous red eyes.
In the days that followed, the city was swept by rumors that firefighters and soldiers had captured one or two creatures, which were taken to hospitals and then out of town. The death of a military police officer from an infection, weeks later, was linked to the case by ufologists, without confirmation.
In 1997, an Army inquiry concluded that no being had been captured and that the creature was a local resident. The witnesses stand by their accounts to this day. Varginha embraced the mystery: it has a water tower shaped like a flying saucer and statues of the ET along its streets.
