The Westall school sighting
The account
Hundreds of students saw a disc land near their school, surrounded by planes, and were later told to keep quiet.
What investigators found
One hypothesis is a cosmic ray research balloon that came down in the area. The witnesses dispute it, and the case remains unresolved.
The story
On the morning of April 6, 1966, students and teachers at the Westall schools, in Melbourne, saw a silver object descend over a nearby field called The Grange, then rise and vanish at high speed. Estimates put the number of witnesses at about 200.
Many former students say that afterward the school received visitors and they were told not to talk about it. Researchers suggested the object was a balloon from a scientific program that was launching instruments at the time. Decades later, the witnesses still gather to remember the day they saw something they cannot explain.
