The Xiaoshan Airport UFO

Disputed Hangzhou, China · July 7, 2010

UFO shuts down airport in China: the footage explainedTheSneezingMonkey

The account

An unknown light over Hangzhou's airport forced authorities to halt flights.

What investigators found

The most cited theory is undisclosed military air activity; the photos that circulated may be camera effects.

The story

On the night of July 7, 2010, Xiaoshan International Airport in Hangzhou, eastern China, suspended takeoffs and landings for about an hour after a luminous object was spotted nearby. Several flights were delayed or diverted, and Chinese state media reported the episode, something rare for a UFO case.

Images of a streak of light spread across the internet, but there is no certainty they show the same object, and skeptics attribute them to long-exposure camera effects. Later reports in the Chinese press pointed to possible military air activity, a theory that never received detailed official confirmation. With no public radar data, the case remains one of the best remembered in Asia.
