The Yukon mothership
The account
A gigantic object covered in lights, the size of a stadium, supposedly crossed the Klondike Highway in silence.
What investigators found
A Russian rocket reentry was considered and ruled out by investigators; the case still has no accepted explanation.
The story
On the night of December 11, 1996, more than thirty people spread along the Klondike Highway in the Yukon, at places such as Fox Lake, Carmacks and Pelly Crossing, reported an enormous object covered in lights. Some witnesses said it was so big it blotted out part of the sky, and none of them heard any sound.
Investigator Martin Jasek, of the group UFO*BC, interviewed dozens of witnesses and put together a detailed report. The most serious hypothesis considered was the launch of a Russian space probe that day, but investigators rejected it on grounds of visibility and the shape described. Skeptics note that size estimates at night are highly unreliable. The case even became the theme of a commemorative coin in Canada.
